The franchise was established in 1989 as an expansion franchise, and such notable NBA stars as Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway, Patrick Ewing, Grant Hill, Tracy McGrady, Steve Francis, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, Dominique Wilkins, and Hedo T?rkoglu have played for the club throughout its young history. As of 2017, the franchise has played in the NBA playoffs 13 times in 22 complete seasons.
The Orlando Magic is one of seven teams in the “big four” North American sports leagues that do not currently have an official nickname or mascot. The other six are the Milwaukee Brewers (Major League Baseball), Seattle Mariners (Major League Baseball), New York Islanders (National Hockey League), Indianapolis Colts (National Football League), Toronto Blue Jays (Major League Baseball) and Utah Jazz (National Basketball Association).
