The team was originally called the “Chicago White Sox” after its first manager, Charles Comiskey. In 1903, with a downturn in attendance due to Chicago’s long-standing fascination with other sports (especially baseball), owner Charles Comiskey changed the name to “White Stockings” before making it permanent two years later to match its National League counterpart, which had already been known as the Chicago Cubs for decades. The name change also enabled Comiskey to play off two popular baseball names—the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox—each of whom had won multiple World Series championships at that point.
