Founded in 1967 as a charter franchise of the N.B.A., and headquartered in New York City since 2012, the Brooklyn Nets are one of only two teams in American major professional sports based in the New York metropolitan area (along with their crosstown rivals, the New York Knicks). After playing for several years at Madison Square Garden and other venues around the city, and after moving to Long Island in 1968 and to New Jersey in 1977, they returned to New York in 2012 by relocating to Barclays Center.
